AksharaIME

Type Marathi on your Mac,
the way it should work.

AksharaIME brings natural, phonetic Marathi typing to macOS — type namaskAra, get नमस्कार, in any app, right where you're typing.

macOS 12 or later. Direct download — no App Store needed. Not yet notarized by Apple — see the install guide below.

Why not just use what's already on your Mac?

Because the existing options weren't really built for this.

Apple's built-in Marathi keyboard

Converts English to Marathi

The transliteration is inconsistent and often just wrong for real words — you spend more time fixing it than typing.

InScript

A whole new keyboard layout

Powerful once learned, but it's not phonetic — every key is a fresh thing to memorize, not something you already know.

AksharaIME

Type it the way it sounds

Spell Marathi words phonetically in Latin letters and get correct Devanagari as you go — no new layout to learn, no guessing which key means what.

How it works

Three steps, and you're typing Marathi everywhere on your Mac.

  1. Install AksharaIME

A normal macOS installer. It adds AksharaIME as a selectable input source in System Settings — nothing else changes.

  2. Switch to it from the input menu

Pick AksharaIME from the menu bar or with your usual input-switch shortcut, same as switching to any other keyboard layout.

  3. Type phonetically, anywhere

TextEdit, Notes, Word, your browser, Slack — type mahArAShTra and get महाराष्ट्र, right in place, as you type.

Pricing

One-time purchase. No subscription, ever.

₹1,499 / first device
≈ $17.99 outside India — shown in your local currency at checkout.

Each additional device is a flat +₹1,000 — pick exactly how many Macs you need. Upgrade to more devices later, anytime, by paying just the difference.

Setting up after you buy

This is an early-access build, so a couple of one-time steps aren't automated yet — here's exactly what to do.

  1. Download and run the installer

It isn't notarized by Apple yet, so macOS will likely block it the first time — this is expected, not a sign something's wrong. Click Done on the warning, then go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down, and click Open Anyway next to the AksharaIME message. You'll be asked to confirm once more.

  2. Log out and back in (or restart)

This is a one-time macOS requirement, not optional — AksharaIME won't be selectable as a keyboard until you do this once after installing.

  3. Add AksharaIME in System Settings

Go to System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → Edit… → +, find AksharaIME under English (or search "akshara"), and add it.

  4. Sign in and activate this Mac

Open AksharaIME Companion from your Applications folder, sign in with the email you used to buy, and activate this Mac. You're set — switch to AksharaIME from the input menu and start typing.

Questions

Is this a keyboard layout I have to learn?

No. You type Marathi words the way they sound, using your regular keyboard — nothing new to memorize.

Does it work offline?

Yes — typing itself never needs the internet. Your Mac just needs to check in online occasionally to keep your license active.

Can I use it on more than one Mac?

Yes — pick your device count at checkout, or add more devices later for the difference in price.

What if I'm not sure it's for me?

This is an early-access build — reach out before buying if you'd like to see it in action first.
